History And
Outlook
History
The school first
started in 1928 as the Serangoon English School.
Housed in a double-storied building at Simon Road, it had only seven
classes, a headmistress and seven teachers. With the growth in
enrolment, the number of classes expanded. By 1937 the School was
providing education up to Standard Eight equivalent to Secondary Three
today. For those desiring to continue beyond Standard Eight, they had
to go to either Raffles Institution or Raffles Girls School to do
their School Certificate.
In 1949, the
school became a full school with the formation of the School
Certificate class and by 1965, pre-university classes were introduced
for both boys and girls.
By 1967, the
school outgrew its premises at Simon Road and had to move to Lowland
Road where its name was changed to Serangoon Secondary School.
In the year 2000,
the school moved once again to its present premises at Upper Serangoon
View.
The alumni began
soon after the school was first set up. However, due to a lack of
interest, it was short-lived. Several attempts were later made to
revive it but it was not until 1981 that the alumni in its present
form came into being.
Today SOSA is
21years old and we are said to have come of age. But we have a long
way to go.
Mission
SOSA is a small
but closely-knit alumni with less than 200 members on its roll.
However, we have a long tradition and rich heritage. More than 10,000
students have passed through its portals first as Serangoon English
School and later Serangoon Secondary School. Several illustrious
people have also been products of the School; the late Minister for
Law Mr E W Barker and Mr Ngiam Tong Dow, Chairman of the CPF Board and
Housing Development Board are two such people.
In line with the
school’s current vision which is to be the Home of Achievers, our
mission and philosophy are to ensure the school achieves this vision
by developing the students into lifelong learners and maximizing their
potential so that they become socially responsible and loyal citizens
with a global outlook, creativity and drive.
Goals
To achieve the
above vision and mission, SOSA aims to:
-
build up friendly relations amongst former students of Serangoon English
School and Serangoon Secondary School;
-
promote co-operation amongst former students of the two schools through sporting, social and
cultural activities;
-
provide
assistance to the Serangoon Secondary School by nurturing the students to excel and
thereby achieving their vision and mission.
